Community Supported Agriculture (CSA)
Weekly Seasonal Vegetable Baskets
What is a CSA?
Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) is a form of direct marketing of fresh vegetables and fruits based on an agreement between farmers and member families who pay in advance for a weekly delivery of fresh vegetables for the duration of the growing season. CSA members receive seasonal, fresh, nutritious and delicious produce at an affordable price, they enjoy a direct relationship with the people who grow their food, and they have the satisfaction of playing an important part in sustaining a healthy local food system.
What is being offered at Donava Angus Farm for the 2009 season?
Due to success and increased demand we are offering an expanded Summer CSA program, with the possibility of winter baskets of vegetables from our root cellar. The Summer CSA season usually begins the third week of June and lasts until mid October. The CSA includes 17 baskets of farm fresh, in-season vegetables delivered weekly to a pick-up point in your area during the summer and fall months. Each week there are new products and old stand bys but the weather determines how bountiful the crop is and when each vegetable is ready. Included in the baskets are many heirloom vegetables and all are organically grown. The heirloom vegetables offer great flavor and in many cases, greater nutritional benefits. Often the veggies are not perfectly uniform and there are more blemishes than their grocery store counterparts but the taste more than makes up for these differences.
How much food is in a share?
Donava Angus Farm offers full or half shares that allow members to choose the amount of produce that is right for them. A Full Share will generally feed a family of four, or a vegetarian couple for a week. A Half Share is exactly the same amount as a Full Share but is picked-up every second week and is suitable for those who enjoy veggies in a smaller quantity.
What will be in a basket?
Expect between 9 and 12 different products each week. Included in our garden this year will be many varieties of: beans, beets, broccoli, blueberries, cabbage, carrots, cauliflower, corn, green onions, herbs, kohlrabi, lettuce/greens, melons, potatoes, pumpkins, rhubarb, snap peas, rutabagas, spinach, squash, strawberries, tomatoes, turnip, and other veggies in small quantities for variety.
How does it work?
When you sign up for your shares you will select a preferred weekly pick-up location or the Farm Pick Up option.
Freshly harvest vegetables will be awaiting you each week. You will be contacted prior to the start of the season to organize pick up details and exact start date.
How is payment made?
Members pay in advance with $100.00 due for ½ shares and $225 due for full shares at registration and the balance due on July 1st. Weekly baskets (17 weeks): $475 total and Bi-weekly baskets (9 weeks): $250 total.
What else is available?
We also offer farm fresh, organic eggs at $5.00 a dozen. The hens are kept in a free-range style and receive only organic grains.
